Display, stand, POS — how do they differ and which one to choose?

There is real naming confusion in the POS industry. One client looks for an "advertising stand", an agency orders a "display", and a retail chain needs a "POS display". We explain the differences and help you choose the right solution.

If you have ever tried to order display material for a shop, a service point or a trade fair, you have almost certainly run into a naming problem. You type "advertising stand" into a search engine, but the results also show "displays", "POS displays" and "stands". Are they the same thing? Or does each of these terms mean something different?

In this article we compare the most commonly used names in the POS (Point of Sale) materials industry. We explain where they came from, in what context they are used and - most importantly - which type of structure will be best for your business. Whether you are looking for a POS display, a leaflet stand or a professional retail display, after reading this guide you will know what to look for and how to describe your needs precisely to a manufacturer.

POS display - definition and applications

A POS display is a professional industry term, most often used in a B2B context, with retail chains and in cooperation with advertising agencies. A display is a structure designed and produced for a specific product or product group. Its main purpose is the presentation of goods in a way that draws the customer's attention and boosts sales.

🏪 POS display

A structure dedicated to points of sale (POS - Point of Sale). Designed for a specific brand, product and location in the store. It often includes branding elements: logo, graphics, LED lighting.

Usage context
B2B, retail chains, FMCG
Typical materials
Acrylic, metal, wood
Example application
Cosmetics display in Rossmann
Key feature: A display is always designed individually - matched to the product dimensions, the store planogram and the brand's visual identity. It is not an "off-the-shelf piece of furniture", but a bespoke solution.

POS displays are used above all in drugstores (Rossmann, Hebe), pharmacies, electronics stores, beauty salons and supermarkets. At PlexiSystem we specialise in the production of POS displays from acrylic, metal and mixed materials. Our projects include, among others, displays for the Rossmann chain.

A floor display is a large structure standing on the shop floor, often with several shelf levels. A counter display is a smaller version placed on the checkout counter or a shelf. Both types are key elements of brands' merchandising strategies.

Advertising stand - definition and applications

An advertising stand is a more colloquial and broadly understood term than "display". In everyday language, customers use it to describe practically any freestanding structure used to present materials - from a simple leaflet stand to an elaborate advertising stand with graphics and lighting.

📄 Advertising stand

A universal, often off-the-shelf structure for presenting printed materials or products. Advertising stands are easier to source, cheaper and more versatile than dedicated displays.

Usage context
B2B and B2C, offices, receptions
Typical materials
Acrylic, aluminium, steel
Example application
A4 leaflet stand at a reception
Key feature: An advertising stand is more versatile - it can serve different products and materials without the need for redesign. It is often available as a ready, off-the-shelf product.

The most popular types of advertising stands are: leaflet stands (A4, A5, DL - with acrylic pockets), catalogue stands (deeper pockets for thicker materials), poster stands (with a snap frame or clips) and information stands (with a sign on a leg). Retail stands are often simpler in construction and cheaper than dedicated displays, which makes them an attractive solution for smaller companies and service points.

Display and stand - English loanwords in Polish POS

In the POS materials industry we increasingly encounter English loanwords that have firmly entered Polish business vocabulary. The two most important are display and stand.

POS display

The term display is used mainly by retail chains, FMCG brands and international advertising agencies. In practice "POS display" means the same as "advertising display unit", but it is used in an international and corporate context. When a brand such as Procter & Gamble or L'Oreal orders POS materials, it uses the term "display" - because that is the convention in global trade marketing.

We can distinguish several types of display: floor display, counter display, shelf display, endcap display (at the end of an aisle) and pallet display. Each of them has a different application and requires a different design approach.

Advertising stand (exhibition stand)

The term stand originates from the trade fair and event industry. An "exhibition stand" is a company's entire display space at a trade fair, but in a POS context an "advertising stand" means a compact, often portable structure used to present a brand or products. We encounter advertising stands at conferences, promotional events, in shopping malls and at airports.

The difference between a "stand" and a "display" is subtle: a stand is more focused on brand communication (branding), whereas a display concentrates on presenting specific products. In practice the line between these terms often blurs.

Comparison - table of differences

Below we present a summary of the most important differences between the various types of POS materials. The table will help you quickly find out which term matches your needs.

Which materials are used in displays and stands?

The choice of material is crucial for the appearance, durability and price of a display or stand. Here are the most commonly used materials in the POS industry:

Acrylic (PMMA)

Acrylic (PMMA) is the most popular material for POS displays. It is transparent, lightweight, easy to work and presents products perfectly. Acrylic can be laser cut, CNC milled, thermally bent and UV bonded. It is available in transparent, opal, coloured, mirrored and satin versions. You can read more about the advantages of acrylic in our comparison of materials for POS displays.

Metal (steel, aluminium)

Metal displays are durable, stable and lend an exclusive character. Powder-coated steel works well in floor displays for heavy products. Aluminium is lighter and ideal for portable structures (exhibition stands, event displays).

Wood and plywood

Wooden displays create a warm, natural aesthetic. They are popular in the food sector (bakeries, delicatessens), cosmetics (natural brands) and the spirits industry. Birch plywood and MDF are inexpensive alternatives to solid wood.

Cardboard

Cardboard displays (from corrugated board) are the cheapest solution, ideal for short-term promotional campaigns. They are easy to transport (folded flat) and fully recyclable. They are used on a large scale by FMCG brands in retail chains.

PET-G

PET-G is an alternative to acrylic - more impact resistant, slightly less transparent. It is ideal for applications requiring greater mechanical strength, e.g. displays in high-traffic areas.

Which type should you choose for your business?

Choosing the right type of POS structure depends on the industry, budget, location and marketing goals. Below we present practical tips for various business scenarios.

Guide to choosing POS materials

Drugstore or pharmacy
Acrylic POS display - dedicated to specific products, with compartments and brand graphics
Why: Chains require consistent visual merchandising and structures matched to their planograms
Office, reception, waiting room
Acrylic leaflet stand - simple, elegant, versatile A4/A5/DL format
Why: You don't need a dedicated design - a ready-made stand does the job
Trade fair, conference, event
Advertising stand - a portable structure with graphics, easy to assemble and transport
Why: The priority is mobility, quick assembly and the brand's visual impact
Shop, supermarket, shopping mall
Retail display - a floor or endcap display matched to the product category
Why: A display must make the product stand out against competitors and maximise sales
