Diffuser, shade, LED cover — what to choose?
A diffuser is a light-scattering element for LED strips — typically a clip-in or slide-in profile. A shade is a lamp cover (ceiling, table, wall) — decorative with diffusion function. LED cover is a generic term for any acrylic element covering LEDs. Choice depends on project: for LED strips you need a diffuser; for a complete lamp — a shade.
What acrylic diffusion level for LED?
30% diffusion — LED dots visible, softer light. Good for decorative effect. 50% — compromise: dots barely visible, strong light. 70% — dots invisible, even illumination — standard solution. Opal (85-90%) — full diffusion, no dots at all, but loses 20-30% of light intensity. For advertising and retail we recommend 70% or opal.
Does opal acrylic yellow over time?
Cast acrylic (GS) doesn't yellow for 10-15 years of standard use thanks to PMMA's natural UV resistance. Extruded acrylic (XT) may slightly yellow after 5-8 years of intense sun exposure. For outdoor applications (facades, sun-facing lightboxes) we always recommend cast GS acrylic with additional UV filter.
What acrylic thickness for LED?
Thin diffusers 1-2 mm — for LED strips in profiles, shelves, stairs. Standard 3-5 mm — for lamp shades, small backlit panels. Thick 5-10 mm — for large-format edge-lit panels, freestanding displays, integrated LED units. For outdoor signs 5-8 mm cast acrylic with UV filter.
Do you mill LED tape grooves in acrylic?
Yes — CNC-milled grooves 8-12 mm wide, depth matched to specific LED tape (5, 8, 10 mm). Tolerance ±0.05 mm ensures perfect fit. Grooves can be straight or curved. Standard for shelves, stairs, furniture, illuminated signage. Grooves + clip-in diffuser = invisible lighting installation.
