PMMA (acrylic) or polycarbonate (PC) for a CNC guard?
Polycarbonate PC — when the guard may be hit by chips, a tool or a part (impact resistance ~200× higher than PMMA). PMMA — when the guard is only decorative or when optical clarity and scratch resistance matter. The standard for CNC machines, mills and lathes is 6-8 mm polycarbonate.
Does the guard withstand coolant emulsion?
PMMA goes matte from oil-water emulsion after 5-8 years (micro-cracks, crazing). Polycarbonate resists longer (10-15 years). For guards in direct contact with coolant always use polycarbonate PC. For external guards (outside the coolant zone) PMMA is sufficient.
What guard thickness for a mill/lathe?
Small mills (3-axis, up to 600×400): PC 4-6 mm. Medium mills (4-5 axis, up to 1200×800): PC 6-8 mm. Lathes: PC 6 mm + aluminium frame (protects against rotating chips). CO2 lasers: orange PMMA 6 mm (filters 10.6 µm) or PC with UV-blocking film.
Do you fit hinges, locks and handles?
Yes — technical aluminium hinges (Sugatsune, Häfele), keyed locks (Securemme), ergonomic handles. For service doors (opened daily) — hinges with soft-close dampers. We can deliver to you with the mounting holes ready for specific fixings.
Does the enclosure reduce machine noise?
8 mm acrylic + an EPDM seal reduces noise by ~15-20 dB. For acoustic requirements (CNC 90+ dB down to <70 dB) — a sandwich of 5 mm acrylic + 20 mm acoustic foam + 5 mm acrylic (reduction 25-30 dB). The specification is individual depending on the workstation.
Are the guards safety-certified?
PMMA and PC acrylics hold REACH/RoHS certification. For safety guards (CE, Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC) — a polycarbonate certificate with IK08-IK10 impact resistance on request. Technical documentation is provided with every order.
